Homemade Baby Food

This past week Olive turned 5 months so I decided to start her on solids. Before I actually had her I knew two things: (1) That I was going to cloth diaper her; (2) That I was going to make her homemade baby food. Well, we have the cloth diapers down so now it was time to fulfill number two. I already had the Baby Bullet that I bought for $20 (a steal!!) so all I needed were the ingredients. I decided to start out with carrots. I did my research on how to prepare, cook, and store her food.

I got all the tools needed: pot, carrots, Baby Bullet or blender, peeler, knife, cutting board, ice tray, cookie sheet, and wax paper Untitled

I peeled a little over a dozen carrots and washed them. Untitled Untitled

I cut the ends off the carrots and then cut them in half. Since the top part of the carrot is thicker than the bottom I cut the top half in half again because I wanted all the pieces to be around the same size. Untitled Untitled

I put the cut up carrots in a pot filled with water and then ate my baked ziti to kill some time. Untitled Untitled

After the carrots boiled in the water for about 8 minutes I put the carrots in the Baby Bullet. I used the same water they were boiled in for the carrot puree because all the nutrients are in that water. I started the bullet and made some baby food! It came out perfect! After I made the puree I used an ice tray and a cookie sheet with wax paper to freeze the baby food servings. After they were frozen I labeled a frozen zip lock gallon bag with the date and put all the frozen baby food in there. I also put one serving in three baby food jar containers for the refrigerator. Olive approved! Best part is that I have stocked up carrot baby food that will last me about 2-3 months, depending on how much I give her, all for less than $1.98! This week I will make a batch of green beans and peas. Untitled

  1. I loved making Joaquin's food and even Arturo made his food. Until Joaquin didn't like my homemade food. All of a sudden he wouldn't eat it and so we had to start buying his baby food. He's such a picky little eater now!! Next baby I'm going to try the ice cube thing and cloth diapers! Good for you for successfully doing both girl!

  2. Thanks girl! It's crazy how cheap it is to do it. I hope that Olive is just as good of an eater the way Layla was and still is. Now that you have Joaquin the second time around it's much easier and you can do both :)
